Digital Product Passport · EU rules

Every product is getting a digital identity.

From 18 February 2027 every battery sold in the European Union must carry a QR code, and for many batteries that code will open a full Digital Product Passport. Batteries are only the first step: textiles, furniture, tyres, steel and electronics are next. Here is what the rules ask for, who is affected and how to get ready, explained by an Italian web agency that already builds digital passports.

—The timeline

  • July 2024

The Ecodesign for Sustainable Products Regulation, ESPR (EU) 2024/1781, enters into force and sets the legal framework for digital product passports.

  • July 2026

The EU registry of passport identifiers goes live, so that customs and market authorities can check them.

  • 18 Feb 2027

QR code mandatory on every battery. Full passport for electric-vehicle, light-transport and industrial batteries above 2 kWh.

  • Next

Steel, aluminium, textiles, tyres, furniture, mattresses and electronics, sector by sector, as each set of rules is adopted.

01What it is

A product's whole story, one scan away.

A Digital Product Passport (DPP) is an online record linked to a product: a model, a batch or a single item. Scanning the code on the label, on the packaging or in the documents opens a page that explains what the product is made of, where it comes from, how to repair it and how to dispose of it properly.

It is not a brochure. It is structured, verifiable data with a unique identifier, kept online for as long as the rules require, usually the whole life of the product. Consumers, repairers, recyclers and authorities each see the information meant for them.

What a passport can contain

  • Materials and substances of concern
  • Origin, manufacturer and supply chain
  • Carbon footprint and recycled content
  • Repair instructions, manuals and spare parts
  • Collection, recycling and end-of-life guidance
  • Certificates and declarations of conformity

02The first deadline

Batteries go first: 18 February 2027.

The first obligation with a firm date comes from the Battery Regulation (EU) 2023/1542. It applies to every battery placed on the EU market, whether produced in Europe or imported.

Every battery

QR code on the label

From the smallest portable cell to the largest industrial pack, every battery must carry a QR code that gives access to information about that battery.

Passport required

A passport for each single battery

Batteries for electric vehicles, for light means of transport such as e-bikes and e-scooters, and industrial batteries above 2 kWh also need a complete battery passport, with a unique identifier for each individual unit.

Who is responsible? The company that places the battery on the market: the manufacturer, the importer, or whoever sells it under its own brand. Distributors, in turn, should check that what they sell complies.

03What comes next

Then, the rest of the market.

Under the ESPR, the European Commission has already named the next priority product groups. Each one becomes mandatory only when its own specific rules are adopted, with their own data requirements and deadlines. That is exactly why preparing early pays off: the data you need takes time to collect.

  • Steel and aluminium
  • Textiles and apparel
  • Tyres
  • Furniture
  • Mattresses
  • Electronics

And jewellery?

No obligation, a real advantage.

Jewellery is not on the list today and has no obligation. That is precisely the opportunity: a goldsmith or a maison that adopts a passport now gets a strong tool against counterfeiting and a direct, lasting relationship with the client after the sale, through warranty, servicing and resale.

The same goes for any premium brand that wants to prove authenticity and origin before anyone asks it to.

04How to prepare

Getting ready, step by step.

  1. Map your products

Which ranges fall under the battery rules or the next sectors, and do you place them on the market as manufacturer, importer or brand owner?

  2. Gather the data

Materials, suppliers, certificates, repair and recycling information often live in different files and departments. Bring them into one structure.

  3. Choose ID and carrier

A unique identifier per model, batch or item, printed as a QR code or DataMatrix, or stored in an NFC tag, on the product, the packaging or the documents.

  4. Decide who sees what

Public information for everyone, restricted data for owners, repairers, recyclers and authorities.

  5. Plan for the long term

The passport has to stay online and up to date for years: hosting, backups and updates are part of the project from day one.

  6. Start with a pilot

One product line, live and scannable, before rolling it out to the whole catalogue.

Good news: the rules do not require blockchain or NFTs. A QR code, a DataMatrix or an NFC or RFID tag, linked to a secure record that stays online, is enough.

05Our digital passports

Passports we already run.

For us, digital passports are not a slide in a presentation: they are live products you can scan today. The same platform adapts to batteries, furniture, fashion, machinery or works of art.

Fine jewellery

Jewel Passport

A QR code for every piece. Anyone can see the public sheet, while the full certificate opens only for the owner, with a PIN. It protects against counterfeiting and follows the jewel over time: warranty, servicing and changes of ownership.

07FAQ

Questions we hear often.

Not sure where your products stand? Write to us and we will look at your case.

Will a QR code be mandatory on every product from 2027?

No. From 18 February 2027 it is mandatory on every battery sold in the European Union. Other sectors will follow one at a time, each with its own specific rules.

Which batteries need a digital passport?

Batteries for electric vehicles, batteries for light means of transport such as e-bikes and e-scooters, and industrial batteries above 2 kWh. Portable batteries do not need a passport, but they still need the QR code.

Do I need blockchain or NFTs?

No. The European rules accept QR codes, barcodes, DataMatrix codes and NFC or RFID tags.

Does jewellery need a digital passport?

Not today. Adopting one early, however, helps fight counterfeiting and adds value to the jewel after the sale.

Who can build the digital passport for my products?

Kriswa, which already develops digital passports such as Jewel Passport, Property Passport and Yacht Passport. Contact us for an analysis of your case.
